The Montessori method and model of education continues beyond the preschool experience to the elementary level.  The program for students 6 to 10 offers hands-on learning while also challenging a growing imagination and ability to reason, question and think abstractly.  Elementary students are keenly interested in their peers and the program provides ongoing diverse opportunities for social growth.  Successful work habits, time management skill, academic competence, accountability for one’s choices and a love of learning are other key outcomes.

The curriculum encompasses the following strands and aims:

Cultural education presents the child’s world, far and near, past and present.  The students examine the origins and workings of the universe and our earth, the emergence of humankind, the rise of civilization and the study of life and physical sciences.  The launching point is always a glimpse of the whole  and then the focus is narrowed to provide an examination of the topic in detail.  The sciences offer an integrated study of life and physical sciences.

Mathematics offers a thorough study from concept to mastery in numeration, arithmetic, geometry, measurement and problem-solving strategies.  The use of concrete, sequential, attractive learning materials that characterize Montessori education is especially apparent in this curricular area.

Language is multi-faceted:  the students progress from learning to read to reading-to-learn.  Research is encouraged, as is creative writing and the development of a personal anthology.  Grammar is an on-going study as other mechanics of our language including spelling.

Other components that enhance the school day are French language instruction (one hour per day/4 days per week), physical education, music and the arts.  Technological literacy is encouraged through work with an in-class computer. In-class visits and field trips provide for the use of community resources beyond the classroom.
